TAX CREDITS IN THE 2009 STIMULUS PACKAGE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS & DOORS

On February 16, 2009, President Obama signed the historic American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  While the law is new, here's a summary of how we see the tax credits for super efficient windows and doors.  The economic stimulus package allows homeowners to claim up to 30% of the actual cost of windows and doors (up to a $1,500 limit).  This applies for work performed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

Very Important Points

Not all energy efficient Windows and Doors will qualify for this tax credit! Only exterior windows and doors that achieve a U-Value less than or equal to 0.30 AND a SHGC less than or equal to 0.30 will qualify for the tax credit.  These are very lofty standards and many replacement windows and doors do not meet these criteria.

How do you know if a window or door meets these requirements? Windows and doors are required to have an NFRC label showing the window or door's U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient.  This labeling certifies that the window or door has been thermally tested and certified to a certain level of efficiency.  Every window and door is different but each should posses a defined set of thermal efficiency numbers.

In layman's terms, the U-Factor of window represents the insulation value of a window.  The lower the number, the better it performs.  The SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) represents how much of the heat is stopped by the window (as a whole).  The lower the number, the better it performs.  In Texas, the SHG is the most critical number that a homeowner should know.

Interestingly enough, many efficient replacement windows that carry the Energy Star Certification do not qualify for the new tax credits.  They may be efficient windows but the bar has been set very high in this new law.  Only the best of the best will qualify!

At Ringer Windows, we're proud to announce that all our windows meet the standards set forth in this new law, if they are equipped with our Super Low-E Glass Package.  Each window package that leaves our shop is accompanied by the appropriate paperwork for you and/or your accountant.  Consult with your Ringer Window Representative for more details about what exactly qualifies and how to make claim for the Federal Tax Credit.
